Can you force a family member into alcohol rehab?

Unfourtunatly, my mother has a severe alcohol addiction and she refuses to go to rehab volunteerely. Both my sister and dad and me agree she needs to go. Is there anything that can force her into rehab? Like. Lawsuits or something. She needs this asap becuase her short term memory is compltely shot. :s it’s sad really, but still is there anyway we can force her into alcohol rehab?
Btw: my dads is 48 me 14 and my half sister it 24

Only if she is a “danger” to herself or to others. The best way to do it is to get her to “agree” through an “intervention” but if she refuses then if she does become a “danger or harm” to herself and cannot care for herself because of her self abuse with alcohol then your Dad would have to ask for her to be admitted through the ER to the Psychiatric Ward on a 72 hour hold and they would have to “assess her” as to if she is a danger to herself or others. If she is then they will recommend some type of treatment. Otherwise after the 72 hours she will be released probably with the recommendation of rehab. it is a very hard thing to do. Good luck.

Unfortunately I don’t think so. My ex-husband is in a very advanced state of alcoholism, I had him stay at my house to watch my dogs while our daughter and I went on vacation. When I came back he was so drunk, he couldn’t stand up. When he went to go to the car, he fell off of the porch and broke the rail and bumped his head. He didn’t seem to know where he was, so I called 911. When the police came i asked them what has to happen to get this man some help? and they said they can’t make him go to rehab, it has to be his decision. I share your frustration. I suggest you try al-anon for you and your family. Btw he has had two dui’s in two months and is going to a weekly class mandated by the court, and hasnt been going, maybe they will arrest him and he will be forced to sober up!
why would u do that to your own family member? leave them alone they are old let them do what ever they want….im just saying
Your father would be able to force her into rehab but that doesn’t mean it would work. He would have to sign papers to admit her and he would have to go through her doctor in order to get that paperwork. There are no “law suits” to force a person into rehab.
The problem is that even though she goes through rehab she may still be addicted, rehab isn’t a “magic pill” and it doesn’t really fix the problem if the person addicted doesn’t WANT the problem to be fixed. Your mother first of all has to recognize and admit to having a problem then SHE has to WANT to get help. If she doesn’t doe either one of those rehab will be a waste of time and your father’s money because it isn’t going to work. The fact that her short term memory is shot is not an indication of alcoholism, it is an indication of Alzheimer’s and is a MEDICAL problem, not an addiction problem. Rehab is not going to fix that problem. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease and can not be cured or reversed, and one doesn’t have to be old in order to have the disease. Your mother first needs medical attention to determine if her problems is caused by the Alzhiemer’s and whether it can at least be treated. Sounds like her family really doesn’t give a damn about her if they’ve been unwilling to recongize that she more than likely has a medical problem and dont’ care enough to seek help for her other than to ASSume she has an addiction problem.
Latj is telling the truth. i have many troubled people from a father who was a previous alcoholic, to many uncles and aunts and cousins who have had problems. And latj is correct because we’ve tried to get my dad help but he finally got arrested for the millionth time and now he’s finally off it….
