Before considering ways to âdetoxâ, let us first understand what toxins are. Without getting involved into scientific terminologies we could look upon anything that is capable of causing a disease on contacting or on being absorbed by body tissues, or simply put anything that is poisonous to our biological functioning, is a toxin.
From this point of view our body also produces a lot of waste matter which can be termed as toxin; fortunately our biological system is so programmed that it gets rid of these toxins as a normal function.
Generals
As far as the body is concerned, alcohol is a poison. Some of the effects of chronic alcohol consumption include damage to the brain (women may be more vulnerable to chronic alcohol consumption), liver, pancreas, duodenum, and central nervous system. Alcoholism causes metabolic damage to every cell in the body and depresses the immune system. It may take years before the consequences of excessive drinking become evident, but if an alcoholic continues to drink, his or her life span may be shortened by ten to fifteen years or more.
Alcohol is broken down in the liver. The repeated consumption of alcohol inhibits the liver’s production of enzymes, impairing the body’s ability to absorb proteins, fats, and the fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K), as well as B-complex vitamins (especially thiamine and folic acid) and other water-soluble vitamins. Many essential nutrients are not retained for use by the body; they are rapidly eliminated through the urine. The toxic effect of alcohol on the liver is very serious. First, excessive amounts of fat accumulate in the liver, a result of alcohol’s effect on the body’s ability to digest fats properly. Next, the alcoholic may develop hepatitis, a condition in which liver cells become inflamed and may die. The final, usually fatal, stage of alcoholic liver damage is cirrhosis of the liver, a disease characterized by inflammation, hardening, and scarring of the liver This prevents the normal passage of blood through the liver, inhibiting the organ’s ability to filter out toxins and foreign substances.
A couple years ago I ran into some tragedies in my work and personal life. I started drinking alcohol to help me sleep. It worked. I felt great when I wake up and I perform great at work.
However, the amount of alcohol I am drinking has increased to the point where I do not know what to do. Since I only drink in the privacy of my bedroom right before I go to sleep very few people are aware I am drinking.
Now I want to get the alcohol out of my life but I am having problems. I work full time and like the place I am working at. If I were to go cold turkey the side effects would be obvious everyone I work with. I know because I have already tried and get terrible results. To avoid this issue altogether I want to do rapid detox.

Detoxification is ridding the body of sustained drug and/or alcohol addiction. It is most often the first step in getting your life back on track. There are people who have had to go through detox alone but that should not have to be the case. Drug detox and alcohol detox can be done in a caring and supportive environment with people who either have been through the process themselves or are trained in detoxification. For alcohol and most drug addictions, there is also medication that can help ease the symptoms of withdrawal.
While in detox, people are able not only to rid their bodies of the harmful drugs but also to discover what triggered the addiction in the first place. Ridding your body of the drugs or alcohol will be useless if you return to the same lifestyle as before you entered detox, so you must learn to change your behaviors. At first, none of it may make sense, but that is the affects of the drugs and alcohol. It does begin to make perfect sense and you see that by changing your behaviors you can get your life back on track.

Who needs alcohol rehab?
Alcohol rehab is the not discussed as much in the public domain as drug rehab, with stories most weeks in the press about celebrities going in to residential rehabilitation centres for drug addiction. Whilst drugs and drug rehab are discussed widely, it is in fact alcohol that is the much bigger killer. For every drug-related death, there are 10 people who die from alcohol-related illnesses, sudden death or accidents. Alcohol rehab in a residential environment is an intensive treatment method, which can stop the inevitable decline of the alcoholic towards a premature death. Whilst in alcohol rehab, other addictions are often uncovered as well and can be very successfully treated. In short, anyone with a dependence upon alcohol can benefit from alcohol rehab – you don’t have to lose everything before benefiting from specialist treatment for alcoholism.
Patients who face the disease of addiction to painkillers have a few options to choose from. I will briefly touch on most of them but will focus on the 2 modalities that are mentioned above.
In my view the treatment options are divided into 3 main categories: 1-medically monitered withdrawal (i.e. detox), 2-maintenance therapy, 3-non-medicated recovery.
