I’m afraid I have a drinking problem; how do I tell my doctor?
Alcoholism runs in my family, and for years, I’ve refused to let myself be drawn in that direction. I have enough emotional concerns as it is; I was diagnosed bipolar 6 years ago and have been in therapy since then.
But recently, problems in my personal life and excessive stress stemming from them have influenced me to begin drinking. A great deal, actually. It’s been a few months, but I am sure that I’m psychologically dependent on alcohol.
And I would like to get help… But I am afraid to do it alone. I’d rather detox by myself and try hard not to drink but I’ve heard horror stories about withdrawal symptoms. I’d rather have professional help, because it will also ensure that I have a support system in place.
So, my question is, how do I tell my therapist? I’m so ashamed…

They may have already picked up on it that you drink a lot. I would start out a session by saying that’s what you want to talk about and then go from there. Good luck!
First of all Therapist and Counselors have heard it all and very little surprise them. How old are you how long have you been drinking and how much will be an indicator of the extent of withdrawal. Most people need inpatient treatment, doing it on your own is very iffy. with a counselor they should be able to get you in a state funded treatment center quickly especially if you are actively using daily. I know telling you there is no reason to be ashamed is a waste of time-I felt the same way. I would be more than glad to chat with you a bit. Feel free to read my profile and e-mail me if you have questions. God Bless Reggie
