Please help me find a free/low cost alcohol detox center in southeast PA?
Question by : Please help me find a free/low cost alcohol detox center in southeast PA?
is there anyone that can help me find a free or very low cost inpatient alcohol detox clinic in southeast Pennsylvania preferably between Philly and Allentown area for someone who has no insurance and little money?
This is for 2 family members. One is disabled and their health is suffering greatly from this addiction and is in the hospital currently (some issues cause by liver disease), my other family members was recently laid off due to the company they worked for closing and their health is not as bad but their addiction does not help stop the other one because they live together. So when the one gets home from the hospital after going through with drawl (they treat with adavan) they go right back to drinking because the other one did not have treatment. They had agreed to go to detox but while we were working on setting them up at a detox clinic the job loss happened and they cut off their insurance.
If anyone can help me find a clinic it’d be greatly appreciated. I need to find one asap before i lose them. And please only relevant and serious answers because im looking for help on finding a clinic and not to be lectured. I’m almost 26 and they’ve been drinking way longer than that so i’m proud that they finally made the choice and are willing to get help.
thank you both for the tips.
JoGusto- they are my parents and it is incredibly draining on me and my siblings. The ill parent beat cancer and leukemia (from result of radiation with cancer) and it kills us watching them suffer and I have days where i feel like im losing my mind. It’s hard to comprehend how one beats cancer but is killing himself by drinking. I know that if he made it through that, he can overcome this too. For myself I’m considering attending some of those AA meetings for family members of alcoholics. Thank you again

I don’t live in your area. Your 2 relatives may have to go their county human services for evaluation. The payment would be based on their income. They would be evaluated and offered treatment but it may be as an outpatient. They must have some motivation to stop drinking or even the best in-patient program will not help them. My local county offers a medication for those who are willing to quit drinking. It is taken every day and blocks the buzz or high one gets from alcohol. Try to see if you can get them in for evaluation as soon as possible.

I think you will have a hard time finding the free/low-cost center you are looking for. This seems to be big business and I’ve encountered the same problem, only with trying to help someone with Cocaine addiction. You ask about it, and they say “Sure, we have room. Come on it. Oh, and bring $ 10,000 to cover the first week, payable up front.”
So, I suggest you start looking at the medical insurance angle and work the problem that way. There are public assistance programs for people who are “Medically Indigent Adults” (MIA’s — bad, huh?) If your family members (you’re being rather cagy about the relationship) don’t have more than $ 2000 in the bank (I think thats the number), they can qualify for this type of assistance with medical bills. If they have that, maybe you can then find a detox that will work with that kind of coverage.
Another possibility is to COBRA the insurance. If the job loss happened very recently, you can still extend the insurance benefits via COBRA. If you can find a clinic that takes the family member’s insurance, you can have the insurance extended and then you’ll be back in business. COBRA is expensive when you elect it and have no definite need for it, except to “better be safe than sorry”; in your case, you can definitely weigh the benefits against the cost, because you know what you want to do with the insurance. This might be your very best option, if the time limit and the cost permits it.
Call the HR person at the former employer. You can also research COBRA in general so you can be prepared to assert your rights (your family member’s rights, actually) in case they give you some funny business. Also get the Certificate of Creditable Coverage from the former employer. It might help when looking for more coverage.
Oh, and it should be said: GOOD FOR YOU for trying to get some help for your relatives. You are to be commended and you have my respect. Remember, it’s a very emotionally draining experience, being a caregiver, and dealing with addicts. Ask for help and/or support from friends and/or other family members. Maybe people can cook for you or something, so when you come home after a long day of dealing with business, working, or caring for your loved ones, you can get a break and take a few minutes for yourself.
I wish you the best of luck, and please remember to take care of yourself too. It won’t do any good if you go down in flames while your relatives get better.
Fist off I applaud you for wanting to help them as you stated to beat cancer to now well sit and drink yourself to death is not a really bright thing.
However that is part of the cycle of addiction once it grabs hold it is Not easy to get loose. i am a recovering addict and have 14 years clean.
I lost everything due to my addiction but managed to bounce back YES I now suffer many health issues but i am alive and have my kids and well life is a Blessing.
Without my kids i would not be here though They helped me find purpose So do not give up ok?
at the same time know that you can not control them and they can love you dearly but that their addiction is controlling them.
I do believe that some meetings would be wonderful for you as well as therapy for co dependents and or kids of alcoholics
this site can give you links to help locate one
http://www.joy2meu.com/CoDA_Meetings.htm
As far as locating a place that is low cost what you need to look for is called a Sliding scale facility.
You mentioned one is disabled? That person should have medical assistance correct?
Do either have any insurance? do either work?
Many states are offering a low income or working poor medical assistance type program
This link gives more info on how to find out who is able to get it
http://www.pamedicaid.pitt.edu/documents/contacts.pdf
Also on the DPW site they offer info on substance abuse help (alcohol is included in this)
Check on this link
http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/foradults/substanceabuseservices/index.htm
Many will have the person come in or do a intake appointment on the phone than come in for intake and then they will do meetings until a bed is available
Sadly there are but so many “slots” or “beds” available in low income rehabs and so it can take a month or so of weekly calls and check ins as ell as meetings to get that bed.
So as said one must be determined to do this and be ready.
