When a person starts alcohol rehabilitation, detoxification is the earliest step and the time it involves varies from person to person and the specific situation. The process of detoxification is helpful when one wants an individual not to go through the abrupt effects that can occur because of trying to relinquish taking alcohol.

In the UK, there are countless alcohol detox centres, which have different detoxification programmes, and one can decide a programme according to the viability and aspects of the programme relative to the needs and requirements.

There are a lot of alternatives about alcohol detox centres when it comes to UK where there are centres in a lot of cities. If you require an advice on the detox centres in the UK, then Triage Health care Ltd can guide you with the placement of individuals in one of the several detox centres in the UK.

One either can go to a local detox centre or can go to any other in UK if it is worth it. There are many Residential Alcohol treatment centres as well. One of the most recognized centres of such kind is The Linwood Group, which has been developed keeping the necessaties of people with alcohol reliance in view. The setting is serene and grants opportunity to the patients for reflection and introspection. Thus, this leaves a positive effect on the patient.

Another alcohol detox centre that is renowned and accommodates patients from various parts of the UK is Abbeycare. There are a number of reasons that are responsible for the centre having such a wonderful reputation. The success rate of Abbeycare in alcohol detox and other rehabilitation treatment is high and convalescence can be ensured without deterioration. The well trained staffs are another reason for the centre to have the repute it does. The setting ensured for the clients is peaceful and offers a good opportunity for reflection on recuperation with the serenity.

There are a lot of other centres in various parts of UK and you can gain insight on them easily by doing a little research. Several companies in UK are independent and help with placement of the clients in different detox centres that relate the requirements of the patient.

If you are looking for your local alcohol detox centre, you can also go to your doctor and they can professionally advice you about the centre that would be suitable for your needs. Seeking advice from a doctor in this regard is useful because from experience, doctors know about the centres that offer various programmes and features and they can give you suitable advice as well regarding your course of action.

While finding the right local detox centre, it is essential to identify the kind of problem that one has with alcohol consumption. The centres take a complete inquiry regarding the circumstances of the patient and then suggest a program. Thus, you can visit a few centres and find out what they offer in their programs. You can then easily decide the one that would be best suitable for you.

Although there are common themes that need to be addressed in all addiction treatment, no two people are alike, and this needs to be taken cognisance of by drug rehabs. Alcoholism treatment programmes will also pay attention to the unique story of each client.

Some regimes rely exclusively on medical techniques and are heavily inclined to dispensing prescription drugs. Other alcohol rehab programs employ a merging of multiple disciplines in a cohesive team to provide a more holistic and integrated treatment experience for those who have become addicted to alcohol.

Anyone trying to choose the most appropriate alcohol rehab centre will know there’s a lot to consider. Alcohol abuse is complex problem with many short and simple answers, unfortunately every one of those answer is wrong!

Alcoholism manifests in very different ways, across different people and ages. The multitude of substances available today have different effects too and it’s rare to find a ‘pure’ alcoholic who hasn’t combined their alcohol with some or other form of drug abuse;

prescription pills
gambling
dagga and other illegal drugs

Therefore it’s critical for treatment professionals to mould each patients programme around the individual and their specific history of alcohol and other drug abuse, as well as considering the overall needs of the patient.

For example: a person who is addicted to alcohol & sleeping tablets needs to receive addiction treatment that is different from somebody who is addicted to alcohol & cocaine or heroin.

It’s paramount that the multidisciplinary team collaborates with the patient in negotiating and agreeing upon a flexible treatment plan that can be altered when needed. This plan needs to address the whole person and consider their, mental, physical and emotional health, legal problems, vocational guidance, accommodation, family history, risk of relapse, social support etc.

The length of stay in an alcoholic rehabilitation centre can often be a bone of contention for people seeking help with their drinking. There’s a tendency to expect that after a few days short detoxification they’ll be able to pick up their lives as though nothing’s happened.

The length of alcoholism rehabilitation is dependent upon patient needs and can extend into 6 months or longer. The initial phase of rehab, where the alcoholic is detoxified and assisted through the essentials of early recovery is known as Primary Care and usually lasts between 21 and 42 days.

There are short alcoholism treatment programs, normally for binge drinkers that run as out-patient rehabs for 3 or 4 weeks enabling people to continue to work during the day time. This type of after-hours rehab is only appropriate for alcoholics who are not dependent on drinking and don’t suffer from withdrawal symptoms.

Then the short term in-patient rehab’s last just a few weeks and are sufficient for the alcoholic to get their life back on track and in order.

The more intensive in-patient rehab’s can last longer and will recommend continued care at a Secondary Care alcohol rehab enable the patient to look at issues around their integrating back into normal life but also enabling them to clear away the wreckage of their past’ more effectively.

Some people have childhood abuse and other issues that need to be addressed after the Primary Care phase of alcohol rehabilitation is over.

Sometimes people with severe alcoholism choose to extend their care by living in a sober environment and benefiting from what is known as Tertiary Care rehab. This phase of alcohol treatment can last for a year.

It is a wise idea to identify what resources are available so that you can develop a sound and sustainable recovery strategy.

For example: you might choose to spend 4 weeks in an intense Primary Care alcoholism rehab program, followed by 4 weeks in a step-down, Secondary Care facility while attending aftercare and outpatient treatment. Thereafter you may opt for living in a Halfway House as an insurance policy to enhance your chances of success.

Unless you know where to find these rehab services and what they entail you might be denying yourself the opportunity to receive addiction treatment that matches your needs.

Psychological interventions are an important part of drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Many substances, including the commonly abused and socially acceptable alcohol, can create serious psychological disturbances that persist even after the person stops drinking or using them.

Additionally addicts and alcoholics develop behavioural patterns that reinforce their using and make it difficult to live clean and sober.

Clearing the body of drugs and alcohol (in a detox centre) is usually fairly straightforward and quite routine. Helping the person to address the mental problems that addiction /alcoholism has created can be significantly more involved.

Most alcohol rehab centres will have some sort of psychological component to their alcoholism treatment program. This enhances the chances of a successful treatment outcome and helps patients to adjust to living life sober and without the use of mind-altering substances.

Alcohol rehab centres are staffed by trained professionals who understand the nitty-gritty of alcoholism and its effective treatment. You will find therapists, counsellors, doctors, nurses, psychologists, and other professionals in any quality alcohol rehabilitation centres.

Each member of the team will perform an assessment of the client. By drawing on the combined knowledge of the team they are able to develop a rich understanding of the individual and make informed decisions about what sort of rehabilitation program is required.

While you are a patient at a drug or alcohol rehab centre you will be assigned a counsellor who has received special training in addictions treatment. Together with other members of the team your counsellor will take a life history and could even recommend certain medical tests. This will further refine the addiction treatment plan.

An alcohol detox centre is a medical facility that offers help for alcoholics who need to undergo withdrawal from alcohol. These centres are professional and have staff that are experienced in treating alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

An alcoholic is a very sick person. They need help physically and mentally to cease drinking, which should ideally begin at an alcohol detox centre. While alcohol is a socially acceptable drug, one needs only take a look at the damage done to the body of a chronic alcoholic to realise that drinking alcohol can be devastating. Yet, why does an alcoholic keep drinking and subjecting themselves to such punishment and embarrassment?

We have all heard the stories of the alcoholic, shaking violently, waiting outside the liquor store for it to open. We have heard of husbands or wives faced with losing their families, their homes and their livelihood, promising family members that they will stop drinking, only to continue. We have heard of alcoholics who decide to stop drinking and pour all of their alcohol down the drain but within six hours are unable to stay stopped due to the agony they feel without alcohol in their system. Why is it so difficult for an alcoholic to stop drinking? There are two reasons: mental dependence and physical dependence.

Help from an alcohol detox centre is often required to help an alcoholic begin a life of sobriety

Alcohol is a substance which can cause physical dependence. When an alcoholic has been consuming alcohol on a regular basis over a period of time, their bodies become physically dependent on having alcohol in their systems. It is due to this physical dependency that when their bodies do not receive the alcohol to which they are dependent, their bodies go into a state of withdrawal. When an alcoholic experiences these withdrawals, their best friend has turned into their worst enemy. That which brought them such comfort is now causing them incredible pain.

Withdrawal symptoms are often called “delerium tremens” or “DTs” and include shaking, tremors, sweating, vomiting, muscle pain, increased heart rate and blood pressure, hallucinations and delusion. Withdrawal from alcohol is extremely taxing on the already fragile alcoholic’s body, and can be dangerous and potentially fatal. Medication is very helpful in assisting an alcoholic in withdrawal from alcohol dependence. Due to the dangers to the human body and the need for medication, professional assistance during a detox from alcohol is extremely important. It is also important that this detox occurs in a facility that is equipped to deal with the complications which may arise. A quality alcohol detox centre will have these facilities and offer the best care possible for alcohol withdrawal. When an alcoholic undergoes an assisted detox that is supervised and monitored by professionals, they stand a far better chance of finishing the detox and remaining sober afterwards.

After detox

Most alcoholism centres will offer an alcohol detox programme, and after completion it is highly recommended that the client continue with in-patient treatment at the centre.

Due to the fact that alcoholism is a disease that is incurable, progressive and can be fatal, the cessation of drinking is but the beginning of the road to recovery. Excessive drinking is a symptom of this disease, and once an alcoholic has stopped drinking, the disease remains. The term “dry drunk” refers to an alcoholic who has achieved sobriety, but has not treated the underlying disease.

To ensure continued sobriety after an alcohol detox, abstinence plus change is extremely important. It is for this reason that the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous have helped so many alcoholics achieve lasting sobriety. The Steps provide a daily programme of recovery to help manage the disease, which in turn enables an alcoholic to return to normal life and live a productive and healthy existence after leaving an alcohol detox centre.

The flaws are that grouping lots of codependent individuals with each other in a closed ‘big brother’ type environment is creating lots of ‘relationships’ between patients who pair off and enable each other to drink/do drugs again.
I am amazed at how people enter services to do the detox for their husband or wife and kids only to forget them in a few days and start a sexual relationship with another user.
What is your opinion on such services and do you have any better ideas?

Many people who find themselves in the grips of a serious dependency on alcohol or drugs enter a drug and alcohol treatment centre to be rehabilitated and treated for addiction without understanding the full measure of the delicate procedure in such a treatment centre.

When a person reaches a stage in their life when their daily responsibilities are impossible to uphold without drugs or alcohol, or they have no life left because of drugs or alcohol, this is the time to seek treatment for their substance problem. Addiction is a cunning illness which sees sufferers lose their families, careers, houses, friends and self respect and will ultimately kill them if they do not become rehabilitated, whether by jails or institutions.

Most rehabilitation centres will regard addiction as a disease which is all encompassing – whether the addiction is sex, eating disorders, self mutilation, drugs or alcohol, the rehab will not only treat the alcohol and drug addiction. These behaviours are considered symptoms of the problem and not the problem itself. Therefore, when a patient arrives at a drug and alcohol treatment centre, they can expect that therapy will focus on all of the ways that their addiction manifests itself.

Arrival

When a client arrives for drug and alcohol treatment, they will be received by the counsellors on duty and asked to sign various forms including indemnity forms and information forms regarding subjects such as next of kin, allergies, whether they require a detoxification, and so forth. Once they have been received and completed the required paperwork, their bags will be searched by the counsellors on duty, as will the new patient and a drug test may be administered via a sample of blood or urine.

Any substances found on the patient or in their belongings are confiscated and disposed of immediately. A doctor may be required to assess the patient for any medical requirements as many addicts and alcoholics have damaged their bodies to a large extent and may need treatment and regular medication.

Detoxification

If a patient has been using drugs and/or alcohol for a lengthy period of time, they may require detoxification as the human body does become physically dependent on alcohol and various types of drugs. Some drug and alcohol rehab centres will offer detoxification to patients but others may not have the facilities to administer a proper detoxification. The withdrawal from drugs and alcohol can be fatal so assistance and proper monitoring is required.

Some drug and alcohol treatment centres will allow a detoxing patient to participate in their programme, others will require a patient to detox before they are allowed to mix with the other patients, however this depends entirely on the treatment centre.

Getting started!

Once the intake of the patient has been completed, they will be assigned a counsellor who will be their one-on-one therapist and the professional in charge of their treatment. The rest of the clients staying in the centre are generally known as the “community” and after having unpacked their belongings the new client will be introduced to everyone and often assigned a “buddy”. A buddy is a fellow patient who has been at the centre for some time already and can help the new client settle in and grow accustomed to how the day-to-day programme proceeds and with any other information they may need.

What happens at treatment centres – the programme

The programme of every drug and alcohol treatment centre differs but the main elements are usually the same – group therapy, individual therapy, written work, meals, walks and sleep. If the centre offers a Twelve Step Programme based on the Minnesota Model of recovery, then patients will also attend AA and NA meetings, have lectures on the elements of the programme and participate in written work.

For the first week of treatment, the client will usually not be allowed to have contact with ANY outside persons, including family and friends. Entering a treatment programme at a treatment centre is incredibly frightening and highly stressful and contact with family and friends can make the process of settling into life at the centre extremely difficult. A client will generally settle into life at the centre within a week or two.

Alcohol and drug treatment centres provide a safe and nurturing place for addicts to start a new life and begin a process of abstinence and change. However, when entering a facility for the first time, many feel very afraid and utterly hopeless, especially as they will be abstinent for the first time. Knowing what to expect and good preparation for admission to a drug and alcohol treatment centre may help the initial shock of turning a life of using into a life of recovery.
