Is it Safe to Detox from Drugs or Alcohol at Home?

Article by Rick Willistone

Detoxing from drugs or alcohol at home can be dangerous, but not for the reasons that many might think. Thanks to the glamorization – and sometimes dramatization – of detox and drug rehab, some addicts and alcoholics never seek help for their problem because of what has been portrayed on the subject by Hollywood and the media. But whether any of these portrayals are accurate or not is hardly significant – the problem is that few of them address the fact that in some cases it can be deadly to detox from drugs or alcohol at home. In fact, Amy Winehouse’s family recently told the press that they think she died as a result of detoxing from alcohol at home too quickly. And if there’s any lesson to be learned here, it’s that detox should always occur in a medically-equipped facility.

Of all the substances that a person can detox from, alcohol is the most dangerous. This is a disturbing figure considering that; “It is estimated that only 10 to 20 percent of patients undergoing alcohol withdrawal are treated as inpatients, so it is possible that as many as 2 million Americans may experience symptoms of alcohol withdrawal conditions each year.” This means that alcohol is not only the most commonly abused substance; it is also the substance that the most people detox from at home. Unfortunately, many people who attempt this outside of a treatment center will be so overwhelmed by the symptoms of Acute Withdrawal Syndrome that they will return to drinking in order to alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by the detox process.

my liver enzyimes are high from alcohol?

Question by Jason: my liver enzyimes are high from alcohol?
so a while ago i had to go to the hospital because i was getting really bad stomach cramps and i couldn’t walk and had to curl up in a ball and it flt like someone was stabbing me with a knife from the inside i did drink 26 ounces of vodka the day before, and took aboutt 10 clonazepam pills. just like any other day. but before i started drinking that day i got severe cramps that hit fast and went to the hospital and was honest about everything, they took a blood test turns out my kidneys are fine and everything seems to be okay but he said my enzyimes are a little high from drinking. i wasnt told much about it but how serious is this? he said it will probably get back to normal if i quit drinking for two weeks. i know it sounds stupid but im not sure if i can do that, i was at work today and all of a sudden i got a little anxious then in about a minute i was dizzy and in total fear. i was shaking really bad, i took 3 pills of clonazepam, still shaking and worrying that they wont kick in fast enough. i waited a few minutes and took 5 more, then i slowley started to calm down and even though i was on 5 mgs of that i just felt back to normal and got back to work. it just seems anything thats a depressant im all over it. i have been to detox twice but the same day i got out of detox i would get drunk without planing on it.

i have been an exsesive drinker for two years and drinking a bit more then avarage for two years before that when i started at 14. i am 18 now. i know i should get help immedantly but i just got a very good paying job and i have a kid coming on the way with an ex girl friend. i dont want to lose my job getting treatment… im not taking my bipolar medication because its bad on the liver so i dont know what to do… im lost the only answer would be to get a bunch of ativan and use and abuse that until i can get help because thats not bad for the liver.

Alcohol rehab in general is focused on trying to make the individual understand as well as cope with his or her troubles without resorting to drinking. The main reason why many people drink is that they cannot handle problems as well as uncertainties in everyday life. In order for them to forget their depressing problems, alcoholics typically drown themselves in liquor, seeking a temporary respite. Hence, alcohol rehabilitation treatment centers generally concentrate on this facet and value the needs of the individual.Outpatient clinic alcohol rehab on the other hand provides several different ways regarding how to aid the alcoholic, and in a case-to-case basis as well. To demonstrate, a simple month-to-month scheduled visit or consultation to a rehabilitation center can be achieved with a person who merely has minimal problems with control over consumption, or perhaps a person whose dependancy isn’t that severe. On this situation, it only necessitates therapy and assessment on the development of the patient and also advices on the patient’s problems which can make him resort to drinking.Clinic rehabilitation can also be employed for retired junkies and heavy drinkers. In fact, clinic rehabilitation is generally contrasting to a medicated alcohol detox or confinement in a detox center. When the affected individual has primarily stopped drinking and has gone through the withdrawal effects, they will then go forward to the next period which is alcohol rehab. Following a successful discharge from the detox center, clinic rehabilitation is essential to help boost the improvement or lessen almost any possible relapse of the affected person. Persistent follow-ups and reminders from the negative effects of alcohol dependency, which are very important requirements for a lasting alcohol detox, can be in the form of clinic rehab. Assistance from family members, friends and co-workers is important for a patient to achieve success.
