What should I do to prepare for my holiday?

Question by Raggamuffin: What should I do to prepare for my holiday?
I’m thinking of having my legs waxed a week before so I don’t have to think about shaving.
Maybe also get my lashes tinted/permed so I don’t need mascara on the beach.

I’m also thinking of giving up alcohol/fizzy drinks/sugar/dairy/wheat for a couple of days beforehand to avoid bloating. How long should I do this ‘detox’ to feel/see the results?

Alcohol detox is an important part of the rehabilitation treatment for alcoholics. It is basically a process that is aimed to remove the accumulated toxins from the patient’s body with the aid of certain medications. In addition to that, this is also done to help reduce the effects of withdrawal syndrome.

Sudden alcohol cessation causes adverse effects in the body, which is manifested through various withdrawal symptoms. Since the GABA neurotransmitters are greatly affected when alcohol leaves the body, the brain enters into a hyper-excited state. This state causes the patient to become more irritable and anxious. In addition, tremors may also be observed in some cases, while heavy drinkers may experience seizures during the detox process.

What I mean is he doesn’t think I should to to any ‘cushy medical detox’ or get any Librium or anything. He said it should be the most horrible miserable experience of your life, so you don’t do it again. Is he right?

Why do we tolerate people in positions that can destroy our nation who are fogged up with drugs and alcohol?

First DUI, should I expect jail time?

I recently got a dui in Denver, Colorado. I go to court in about 3 and a half weeks. I understand that I will have to pay fines, lose my license, do community service and take alcohol classes. I’m prepared for all this, but I’m mostly nervous about the mandatory 5 days to a year in jail. I’ve had a clean record prior to this. I willingly took a breathalyzer and blew a .144. I was sent to detox for 5 hours. I am currently collecting unemployment benefits and looking for a job like crazy! I’m don’t know if doing jail time will end my ui benefits or just interrupt it. Either way, I will lose my apartment, my car, my dog and I’ll have nowhere to go. I have started my alcohol classes early. Is it possible that the judge will wave the jail time so I don’t interrupt my classes or my job search? Basically, I’ve read that when the law says “mandatory jail time” it is still up to the judge to decide whether to give it to me. I’ve also read that a BAC of .2 and over is when they really start enforcing the jail time. Is this true? I’ve also heard conflicting stories about whether a lawyer will really be able to help me or not. Not that I could afford one anyway.
For what it’s worth, I left my car at the bar and started to walk home when I ran into a friend who was too drunk to walk straight let alone move his car and it would definitely get towed in the morning. Trying to be a helpful friend, I foolishly agreed to move his car for him and got pulled over for not using a turn signal. The cop who did my finger prints said he wouldn’t have thought i’d blow that high from just talking to me. Still, it was a stupid decision and I’m ashamed and sincerely sorry.
I don’t need the law quoted to me, I need advise from someone who has been thru something similar. Maybe someone with recent experience because the law changed on July 1st. Thank you….
So it’s clear, I absolutely am not making excuses for what I did, and I will completely own up to it to the judge and do what I have to do. I only added the details of my arrest to clarify that I did not get in an accident, kill someone, resisted arrest, etc, because I would surely recieve different answers if that had been the case…

I know of a friend who has been suffering from chronic alcoholism for quite some time. I opened up the idea of treatment to him and he found the idea very welcoming and asked me to ask around for an alcohol rehab nearby.

Should I disown my father?

He’s really nasty towards me. He always calls me names and tells me to shutup for no reason. He does not do this to anyone else. He treats my brother and stepsister with respect and never talks to them this way. He was mad because I moved away from where he lives with my son. He tried to kill me 2 years ago by strangulation and I forgave him for it. I can’t take it anymore. I’m always nice to him. Yesterday I was talking to him nicely and he said shut up in the middle of nowhere. He’s 57 and I’m 30. He’s nice to everyone else. He’s obese and he calls me anorexic . He screams and yells at me at the drop of a hat. I never ask him for anything. I’m very responsible. He says I’m a bitch and other things . He also just got of detox for alcohol withdrawal. Please help. I don’t know what to do.
Thanks everyone for the advice , I really appreciate it. :)

My older brother was a smart guy. Brilliant, actually. He has two advanced degrees and speaks four languages. When he got two DUIs during college and then grad school, we were concerned but didn’t think alcohol and drugs would take over his entire life. That was ten years ago. Today, he cannot hold a job and literally cannot function without alcohol in his system. He went through detox last year and went into cardiac arrest. He has been in and out of rehab, and in and out of hospitals. Which is where he ended up late last night, beaten severely with a baseball bat. I could go on forever detailing the ways in which he has destroyed my family’s lives. But my question is this: is there ever a point at which you should wash your hands of a relative who doesn’t want to save himself?
